The Governing Body

The governing body provides an important link between the school, parents and the Local Authority. The governing body at Henshaw CE First School is very supportive and proud of the school. Governors work in a close co-operative partnership with the headteacher and staff to promote its aims, values and positive ethos.

A termly meeting of the full governing body is held along with termly sub committee meetings to discuss issues relating to staffing, curriculum, finance, and  premises. Minutes of governing body meetings which are displayed in the school entrance  reflect professional discussion which  provides for the school an excellent balance of challenge and support.

In order to make informed decisions in carrying out their responsibilities and to give the best possible support to the school, governors are helped by:

  • the experience and expertise of individual governors
  • detailed reports about the school from the headteacher
  • advice and information from the City Council and Diocesan Board of Education
  • a planned programme of governor visits to the school
  • training sessions and interest seminars

The number of governors is determined by the size of the school. Governors are appointed for a four-year term of office. The composition of the governing body is as follows:

Foundation Governors are elected by the Diocesan Board of Education and the Parochial Parish Church Council.

Parent governors are elected by parents of registered pupils at the school.

Staff governors are elected by and from the teaching staff of the school: the non-teacher governor by the non-teaching staff.

Community governors are co-opted by the governing body to represent and involve interested parties from the wider school community.
